Why we invested

Foray is building a system of plant-cell intelligence, powered by the world's largest in vitro plant dataset and a fabrication system that creates an entirely new path to plant products. These products can be cultivated, harvested and brought to market at a fraction of the time, cost, and labor of traditional methods. Ultimately, Foray is assembling a platform where plant‑cell culture can be searched, modelled, and fabricated across the entire spectrum of plant species.
Today, scaling a desirable plant trait from lab to field deployment often takes decades and hundreds of millions of dollars. AI and genomics are surfacing more valuable plant traits than ever before, shifting the bottleneck from discovery to development and production. When plant cells are the unit of focus, rather than the complete organism you are able to edit a cell to produce exactly what you desire and no more (for example: scent, flavor, fiber).
Ashley Beckwith grew up in Colorado with a visceral sense of what’s at stake. After studying mechanical engineering at MIT, she moved to a permaculture farm and was exposed to the friction between the boundless potential of plants and industrial practice. She returned to MIT to complete a PhD that integrated bioengineering and advanced manufacturing that led to founding Foray.
Foray’s ambition is to drive a break from an extractive plant economy by growing seeds, molecules, materials, and drugs without wild harvests. By shortcutting plant growth, Foray will 10x access to the plants and plant products the world needs, at scales and speeds never before possible.

“Decoupling product from the plant represents a categorical break from the logic that use must imply depletion. We can move to a model of perpetual growth. Biodiversity starts to behave like an endowment fund. ”
