Why we invested

Every year, ~10% of food worth over $250bn is lost to toxins, pathogens, yeasts, molds, and pests between the time it leaves the farm and finds its way to our tables. In addition to inflicting damage to the environment, these contaminants impact human health at an extraordinary scale with 600M cases of food-borne illness and 480,000 associated deaths annually.

Clean Crop is the first company to commercialise cold plasma - a precise treatment that kills food contaminants with lightning in a box. They recover the 10% we've lost and leave the other 90% of the world's food safer, more nourishing, and more valuable.

Pasteurisation for hard goods

What pasteurisation did for liquids, Clean Crop is doing for solid foods — nuts, seeds, meat and seafood. Rather than covering everything in chemicals or destroying it's quality with high heat, they direct electricity into a bolt of lightning to precisely target the surface of solid foods and seeds. Cool, fast, no chemistry, they hit microbes hard, protecting food from contamination and unlocking more value in every harvest.

Accelerating growth, health and economics

Food-borne contamination is a $250bn opportunity cost across nuts, grains, seeds, and produce lost each year. When used to treat seeds, the system does more than protect customers from contamination losses — it adds value, accelerating germination and lifting yield. Starting with seeds and nuts allows Clean Crop to deploy the same design at high margins, and AI powered process optimisation continuously improves how the cold-plasma treatment operates.

Dan²

Dan White grew up in agriculture, and was working on supply chains all over the globe when he met Dan Cavanaugh on the same peanut project in East Africa. For years they worked together to unlock export value for farmers, and kept slamming into the same wall: once contamination enters in the supply chain, you can't take it back out. It's becomes a cost everyone eats. So they went hunting for a way to take it back out. They found cold plasma research, began tinkering with it, worked out how to run it economically, and have been scaling it to end food waste since.

End state

Clean Crop makes the entire food system more abundant: more from every seed; more from every field; more value back to farmers; healthier, fresher food on our tables; and, less waste in landfill.

Every calorie we produce one way or another is making its way to satisfy the growing food security challenge that we have ahead, and keeping down those total emissions needed to get there.
